Inside CCMK: Determination

July 30, 2013

This year at Camp Hero, we met a bright young military kid, Daismar. Daismar is 12 years old, and her Dad is in the National Guard. Deployed for almost a year, her father called our office from his barracks in Afghanistan to make sure Daismar got a spot at Camp Hero. We knew that Daismar would be a stand out camper from the moment she arrived at camp; she was full of energy and already making friends as soon as she stepped out of her mom’s car. She had a great time participating in the morning work outs, cooling off on the water slide, and even being interviewed for the evening news! Mid way through the week, Daismar accomplished a challenge that proved to us that programs like Camp Hero can make such a big difference in the lives of military kids.

The Crew headed to Brownwood, Texas on Friday, July 19 to take part in the closing ceremony for Camp Corral, a free summer camp for military children whose parents were killed, disabled or wounded during military service. Much like our own Camp Hero, these children can bond with each other while taking part in some amazing adventures. This was the second year that The Comfort Crew took part in Camp Corral, and camper’s got a special treat when Co-Founder, Ronda Englander and VP of Development, Angela McDonald, personally delivered each of the 175 military children Comfort Kits to support their individual needs. The Crew provided  Taking Care of You! Kits for children of injured heroes, Memory Boxes to those children who had lost a parent, and […]

Deployment Kits at Datona International Speedway and Pocono Raceway. “Every weekend we have tremendous support from the military and we also give them tremendous support,” [Jeff] Gordon said. “It just seems like such a perfect match.” Gordon said it was “fantastic” the Foundation was able to get the military families “that are sacrificing so much” to package the boxes to help children have “an understanding and fun tools to understand where their mom or dad or both may be.” Thanks to supporters like NASCAR President Mike Helton and several driver’s, including Jeff Gordon,  2,500 With You All the Way! kits are on their way to support military kids with loved ones stationed at Ft. Diary of a Military Kid: Coming to Terms

July 6, 2013

I could have been a lifeguard this summer, a waitress, a college kid cashier at the brand new, fancy grocery store down the street. Instead, I decided to work far away from home, pitch my tent, and live and work on an organic farm in rural Virginia. I learned how much time on the part of small-scale farmers is dedicated to the production of quality produce, how to treat growing things like an art, and the beauty of close observation. I learned how to practice the peaceful resistance of a small-scale farmer, someone who refuses to let genetically modified organisms and pesticide use define the food market of the entire nation and struggles to make produce available to people of all economic backgrounds.

Diary of a Military Kid: Keeping it in Perspective

June 30, 2013

For most of my teenage-hood I skipped out on that phase of intense embarrassment of my parents and seeming need to make my entire belief structure stand in stark contrast to theirs the media is constantly promoting. A lot of that rebellion just comes naturally with age, but I’m sure shows targeting pre-teens with caricatures of “lame” parents, examples of the socially disastrous consequences of groundings, and the need to be constantly socially connected with your peers versus your parents don’t help much either.
