Month Of The Military Child

April 9, 2014

For Month of the Military Child, we are highlighting our Bringing Families Back Together program benefiting over 100,000 military kids ages 6 to 12. When a parent is going to be deployed, they can request this program through USO Centers around the world or directly through the CCMK Web Portal. With You All the Way! Dealing with deployment is a comfort kit filled with strategies to help guide families as they prepare for deployment, stay connected while they are separated, and what to expect when the family member returns home. Together Again! Helping military families reconnect is a new resource delivered once the family is reunited. This comfort kit is focused on the unique challenges families face when learning to live together again. After a year or more of being separated, everyone has changed. This resource includes interviews of military kids and families sharing their experience with homecoming and the […]

Cuzzie Goes To Washington

April 1, 2014

The 2014 With You All the Way Spring Tour, sponsored by the USO, is halfway through. The Crew has presented to over 8,000 military kids in grades 2nd – 6th so far this year. Each military child that attends the presentation receives a Military Family Empowerment Pack filled with strategies to navigate issues all kids face: bullies, homework, friendships, and healthy choices; as well as information about deployments, frequent moves, and reintegration. Most schools we visit are located off base so a large percentage of our audiences are non-military. Students gain important information about universal childhood issues, in addition to learning how to support their friends dealing with the additional challenges that come with growing up in a military family. Last week, we visited Francis T. Evans Elementary and Imagine Andrews Public Charter School. The USO film crew shot some great footage for the new video promoting this important program […]

USO World Tour Report Card From Teacher

March 14, 2014

Our USO world tour of America took us to Pensacola this week.  We had a great series of presentations and the kids were very receptive and left each presentation brimming with new ideas about ways they could help support each other. During one of the presentations, the kids really dug deep to share their feelings and some of the struggles they were experiencing.  I was so proud of them because it takes a lot of courage to express heartfelt feelings in front of a big group of kids. I told them I wished some adults could learn from the hard work they did in the presentation that day as they described how bullying made them feel or how they felt bullying someone else. After the kids had left and we were packing up our sound equipment, one of the teachers came back to the presentation room to talk to me.  […]

Comfort Crew Challenge Coin

March 7, 2014

Presenting someone with a “challenge coin” is a long standing tradition within the US Armed Forces. The coins symbolize unit identity and brotherhood. Each piece usually bears unique unit symbols or mottos that identify the group in which they represent, and are often traded, presented, and collected between unit members. Challenge coins capture the very essence of military affiliation and instill pride to those that carry them. The Comfort Crew created a special challenge coin that is based on this same tradition. We present these coins to students during our travels with the USO With You All the Way Tour. When we give a child a challenge coin, it is our way to acknowledge that sometimes being a military kid is tough. We challenge them to use the strategies we give them, find ways to express what they are feeling, and to make a difference in their community.

Spotlight Athletes

February 11, 2014

Meet this week’s Spotlight Athletes, Kristin Arteaga and Michael Gonzales. Kristin and Michael will both carry 35-40 lb rucksacks while running in the Austin Half Marathon this Sunday to support military kids. Kristin Arteaga is an Army ROTC cadet at the University of Texas majoring in Human Biology/Pre-medicine. She wants to pursue a career in the army as a medical corps officer. She is on UT’s Army ROTC ranger challenge competition team and is also competing in the Bataan Memorial Death March this year with four other cadets. She has decided to ruck the Austin Half Marathon in support of The Comfort Crew. Kristin wants to support The Comfort Crew because she was the child of a military family and understands the difficulties that accompany a military lifestyle, especially as a kid. She hopes for the future success of The Comfort Crew, as she would love for such a program […]

2014 Military Motivators

February 3, 2014

MEET OUR MILITARY MOTIVATORS FOR THE AUSTIN MARATHON The Comfort Crew has identified motivating stories that will encourage our runners to accomplish their personal running goals during this year’s Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. Last year, several of our runners sent their finisher medals to their Military Motivators as a token of their appreciation. Meet our Military Motivators to see why our runners are inspired during their running journey. SSG BOBBY HENLINE On April 7, 2007, tragedy stuck when Bobby’s humvee was hit by a roadside bomb near Bagdad. Of the five men in the vehicle, Bobby was the only survivor. Operation Holiday Hope 2013

January 13, 2014

Thank you to everyone that participated in Operation Holiday Hope! Military kids that have a parent deployed this holiday season received a card from The Comfort Crew, a global phone card from Zilliant, and an invitation to view messages from folks all over the country. Here were some of our favorites: Hello and HAPPY HOLIDAYS! My name is Jessica, and I am a strength and conditioning coach in Austin, TX. I am so excited to have the opportunity to write you this holiday message! I love writing Holiday cards, and this is by far the coolest one I’ve ever done. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your parent for all they do for me as an American, and for you who supports and allows your parent to do their important job. I’m sure it’s not easy to have a soldier as a parent, but I also know […]
