CARRY THE LOAD AIMS TO TAKE BACK MEMORIAL DAY
When did Memorial Day become more about mattress sales instead of honoring our nation’s fallen heroes? “Carry the Load” was founded five years ago by former Navy SEAL, Clint Bruce in an effort to bring back the true meaning of Memorial Day, honoring our fallen. On Sunday, May 24, 2015, Carry the Load-Austin will take place at Reveille Peak Ranch near Burnet, TX.
The mission of this family-friendly and free event is to bring American patriots together to celebrate a meaningful Memorial Day and honor service members, law enforcement officers and firefighters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Last year, over 1500 individuals and veterans from all generations participated in the Carry The Load-Austin event at Reveille Peak Ranch.
The May 24th event at Reveille Peak Ranch will have two major components:
A 20.14-mile walk, in which people will “carry the load” in honor of a fallen hero who can no longer carry the load for us. Teams or individual participants can pre-register via http://carrytheload.org. This is not a race and individuals are encouraged to come and walk or run as much as they like.
A formal ceremony and Texas capabilities demonstration at 9AM will kick off the event showcasing the capabilities of the State of Texas law enforcement, military and firefighters including parachuting, helicopter water entry and rappel tower. The First Cavalry Horse Detachment and Round Rock SWAT will also bring static displays for photo opportunities and children education.
Funds raised from Carry the Load-Austin team donations and event sponsorships will support local nonprofits serving veterans and their families: The Comfort Crew for Military Kids and Serve Who Serve. Gates open at 7:30AM, Military demonstration begins at 9AM and the Memorial March at 10:45AM.
One special team called “No Walker Left Behind” led by Navy veteran, Damon Fogel, will begin their march a day early. This group of 20 will depart from Texas State Cemetery in East Austin at 0700 on Saturday, March 23rd, walking over 50 miles to Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet to arrive in time for Sunday’s opening ceremony. “Marching from the cemetery brings it home for me and helps me remind my kids how significant the people in this resting place mean to us and America, that’s why we do it” says Fogel. This team will also carry an American flag they’ll present to the family of one of our fallen upon arrival at Reveille Peak Ranch and formal ceremony.
